Comcast Program for Low Income Families

Comcast offers a program for low-income families called Internet Essentials. The program provides low-cost access to the Internet and affordable computers as well as digital literacy training to families with children who are eligible to receive free lunches under the National School Lunch Program. Internet service provided through Internet Essentials features download speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 384 Kbps.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and Universal Service Fund (USF)

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, LIHEAP, is a federally funded program that helps families and individuals with their energy bills. New Jersey's program is administered by the Department of Community Affairs. Assistance is provided for heating assistance, emergency crisis assistance, and medically necessary cooling assistance.

New Jersey Weatherization Assistance Program

Assist elderly, handicapped and low-income persons in weatherizing their homes, improving their heating system efficiency and conserving energy. Assistance is provided to low-income occupants and community-based agencies assisting low-income occupied dwelling units.

NJ LifeLine Program

NJ Lifeline is a $225 yearly credit for your electric or gas bill. You must be 65 years old, or a disabled adult at least 18 years old who is receiving Social Security Disability benefits. Your income must be under $24,432 for a single person or $29,956 for a married couple. If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) you do not need to apply, your Lifeline benefit is in your monthly SSI check. Apply online or phone the Middlesex County Department of Senior Services, 75 Bayard Street – 5th Floor, New Brunswick, NJ 08901.

NJ SHARES

NJ Shares provides energy, water, and phone assistance to moderate and fixed-income individuals and families living in New Jersey who are in need of temporary help in paying their energy bills. Eligibility is based on household size and income. Applicants must demonstrate a temporary financial need and a history of good-faith payments to their energy provider. Grants must result in continuance and/or restoration of service.

Verizon New Jersey Communications Lifeline

Verizon New Jersey partners with NJ Shares, a statewide nonprofit corporation, to help individuals and families living in New Jersey in paying their telephone bills. Verizon offers two programs: Communications Lifeline and Link Up America. Through Link Up America, eligible new customers receive a 50% discount on the initial phone connection charge, with the remaining 50% paid in 12 monthly installments. Through Communications Lifeline, existing Verizon residential customers may be eligible to receive discounted local telephone service.
